KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said that the collaboration between the Malaysian Government and the founder and chief executive officer of Tesla Inc and SpaceX, Elon Musk, will create tens of thousands of skilled job opportunities in the country.

He said this comes after Musk agreed to make significant investments in Malaysia, including setting up Tesla headquarters in Cyberjaya.

Anwar said Musk himself conveyed the matter to him during their virtual meeting today, which was also attended by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz and Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

"Musk also agreed to collaborate with the government, involving his company, SpaceX, the satellite internet service Starlink and electric vehicles (EV).

"In fact, three Malaysian companies will also be involved in the project with SpaceX. During the meeting, Musk also expressed intention to visit Malaysia soon," he told reporters when met after performing Friday prayers at the Al-Khairiyah Mosque in Taman Sri Gombak here today.

Anwar said the discussion with Musk is a significant development for the country, particularly in the field of EV.

"On Starlink (satellite services), which involve internet access and connectivity, we agree that this collaboration will provide affordable direct internet access to rural areas, schools, and universities.

"In fact, in this regard (Starlink satellite services), he (Musk) affirmed that priority will be given to Malaysia," he said.

The virtual meeting which began at 9.30 am lasted about 25 minutes.

Last Friday, Anwar reportedly said that he would hold a virtual meeting with Musk this week to discuss the possibility for the EV company to invest in Malaysia.

11 new members appointed to DBKL advisory board

ELEVEN new members have been appointed to the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) advisory board, who will be tasked with offering city management recommendations to the mayor.

DBKL, in a statement, said the advisors were presented with their letter of appointments on Friday (July 7), for a two-year period effective May 15.

Under Section 6(1) of the Federal Capital Act 1960, the appointment of the Advisory Board members is by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who will act on the advice of the Prime Minister or the mayor.

The letters were presented to the members by Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Kamarulzaman Mat Salleh, replacing the advisors who completed their respective two-year terms.

Appointed to the new board is Datuk Seri Shafei Abdullah, Datuk Seri Izudin Ishak, Datuk Tong Nguen Khoong, Datuk Ismail Ngah, Datuk Afdlin Shauki Aksan, Datin Rashidah Mohd Sies, Dr Abdul Basir V. Kunhimohamed, Lai Chen Heng, Jayakumar R Muniandy, Hayatul Kamil Termudi and Leong Ooi Kuan.

With the new board members, it completes the 13-member advisory board, together with Datuk Setia Di-Raja Datuk Abdul Ghani Pateh Akhir and Federal Territories Department director-general Datuk Seri Rosida Jaafar, DBKL added.

A quick check showed that several of the board members are political appointees while the rest have technical backgrounds.

StarMetro had previously reported that there had been some uncertainty on the appointment of the advisory board since there was no longer a Federal Territories Ministry.

The ministry was restructured after the 15th General Election to become the Federal Territories Department, under the purview of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia maintains its position as the fifth largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in 2022 after Australia, the United States, Qatar and Russia.

According to the 14th annual World LNG Report 2023 released by the International Gas Union (IGU) on July 12, LNG exports from Malaysia in 2022 totaled 27.3 million tonnes (MT), up from 24.9 MT in 2021, which is about seven percent of total LNG traded globally.

The report said Asia Pacific remains the largest market for LNG, exporting a total of 136.6 MT in 2022 and importing 160.9 MT, with most LNG traded in the same region at 97.9 MT.

IGU President Li Yalan said the world sees the high value of LNG as an optimal source of flexible, reliable and efficient energy.

"Flexible energy is needed for the world to continue its journey in the energy transition safely," he said in the report.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Gas Association (MGA) President Abdul Aziz Othman said in a statement that LNG is a type of liquefied natural gas that allows the fuel to be delivered in bulk over long distances.

In order to ensure sufficient and uninterrupted supply to consumers in Peninsular Malaysia, he said LNG was brought in to supplement the supply from offshore natural gas.

"In the past, natural gas has ensured energy security and driven economic development and we expect natural gas to remain the core fuel in the coming decades.

"As the prime minister mentioned during the opening of Energy Asia in early June, Malaysia will continue to see natural gas play an important role in the energy mix to move towards a lower carbon economy," said Abdul Aziz.

Afdlin received the letter of appointment from the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, Kamarulzaman Mat Salleh

KUALA LUMPUR: ACTOR and director, Datuk Afdlin Shauki recorded another new achievement in his artistic profile when he was appointed as a Member of the Advisory Board of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) starting July 7.

The appointment also saw  Afdlin Shauki Aksan become the first artist to hold the position.

Commenting on his appointment, Afdlin said he was surprised when he was asked to send a curriculum vitae to DBKL, before being offered the position as a Member of the Advisory Board.

In addition to Afdlin, there are 10 other new members appointed to the advisory board to offer advice to the Kuala Lumpur Mayor.

"I think this is the trust given by the government to artists like me.

"I believe that my appointment can help give understanding to DBKL regarding the problems of artists involving performances, whether singing or live programs.

"Kuala Lumpur is also one of the locations with the most artistic workers. So I hope this city can become an art hub so that we can attract more young people to join the art industry, not only in front of the scenes, but also behind the scenes," he told Sinar Harian.

Hoping to turn the capital city into an art center hub, the 52-year-old figure explained that even though Kuala Lumpur is already known in the eyes of the world, it is not wrong to introduce this city as an art city.

"If we look at foreign countries, there are cities that they have turned into art hubs to attract more tourists and why not for us to do the same in Kuala Lumpur.

"We may be able to organize various international art festivals or other activities that are interesting not only for local citizens, but also for tourists," he explained.

In the meantime, when asked if his involvement would pave the way for Afdlin to step into the political world, the Papadom star had his own answer.

"Right now I don't want to be a politician and want to focus on this task first. However, for the future, I'm not sure," he said simply.

Meanwhile, sharing about his art career, Afdlin said, he is still active and this new position does not limit his career.

"God willing my film, Baik Punya Along will be released early next year and I will also direct another new film in the near future.

"Although this is a new job, but it does not interfere with my art career and I will go to the office if needed because it is not a permanent job," he explained.

BANGKOK: Thailand's Pita Limjaroenrat failed on Thursday in his initial bid to become Thailand's next prime minister, after he was thwarted in a high-stakes parliamentary vote that included a host of no-shows and nearly 200 abstentions.

The leader of election winners Move Forward was unopposed in the contest but struggled to muster the required support of more than half of 749-member the bicameral parliament, despite the backing of his eight-party alliance.

Another vote is expected to be held next week, which Pita can contest if nominated again.

The progressive Move Forward party and its alliance partner, Pheu Thai, thrashed conservative pro-military parties in the May 14 election, seen widely as a resounding rejection of nearly a decade of government led or backed by the royalist military.

Thursday's vote was a critical test of Pita's political clout and a gauge of the opposition to his party's anti-establishment agenda, which includes removing the military from politics, curbing business monopolies and amending a law that prescribes long jail terms for insulting the monarchy.

His defeat was the latest blow in a torrid two days for the 42-year-old, U.S.-educated Pita, who saw two legal complaints against him gain momentum on the eve of the vote, including a recommendation to disqualify him, prompting hundreds of demonstrators to gather and warn of moves afoot to keep Move Forward from power.

Pita's determination to pursue Move Forward's agenda has put him at odds with a powerful nexus of conservatives and old-money families that have loomed large over Thai politics for decades, and had been expected to try to thwart him in parliament.

Despite winning the election on massive youth support and popularity in the capital Bangkok, Pita needed to win over some of the 249 members of the conservative-leaning upper house Senate, which was appointed by the military after a 2014 coup.

While the final text of the IPEF Supply Chain Agreement is yet to be unveiled to the media, initial indications have partially revealed its main features, suggesting the creation of comprehensive regulations and institutional mechanisms. The success of this agreement hinges on its implementation, with a particular focus on delineating tangible measures and possibly establishing specialized projects to propel further advancements.

Launched by US President Joe Biden in May 2022 during a Quad Summit in Tokyo, the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) is a coalition of 14 member countries including India, Australia, Brunei, Fiji, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The IPEFs declared objective is to establish a shared framework based on four key pillars: connectivity and digital trade, resilient supply chains, clean energy, and corruption-free fair trade. But the IPEF is generally viewed as the United States strategic response to its perceived retreat from the Asia-Pacific region during the Trump era, symbolized by the withdrawal from the ambitious Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), now known as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Evidently, the IPEF is an assertive move by the Biden administration to counter Chinas increasing sway in the Indo-Pacific region. With the IPEF, the United States aims to expand its economic leadership in the region while advancing its foreign policy and economic interests. Through strategic partnerships with member countries, Washington seeks to enhance the development of supply chains and promote regional connectivity in both physical and digital realms. In doing so, the United States hopes to solidify its position as a dominant economic force in the Indo-Pacific region, asserting its influence and securing its long-term economic and strategic objectives.

As per media reports, the proposed agreement has suggested the establishment of three bodies: a Supply Chain Council, a Supply Chain Crisis Response Network, and a Labor Rights Advisory Board. Additionally, the United States has pledged to initiate technical assistance and capacity-building programs, such as digital shipping pilot projects and an IPEF STEM Exchange Program. Nevertheless, the global response from th...

LONDON: One of Britain's leading television news anchors, Huw Edwards, was identified by his wife on Wednesday as the BBC presenter facing allegations he paid a young person thousands of pounds for sexually explicit photos, the broadcaster reported.

Edwards announced the death of Queen Elizabeth to the nation in September and has led coverage of the biggest events in Britain since the turn of the century, including elections, royal weddings and the 2012 Olympics.

His wife, Vicky Flind, said she was making a statement out of concern for Edwards' mental health and to protect their children, after the initial report by the Sun newspaper dominated the news agenda and sparked days of speculation.

"Huw is suffering from serious mental health issues. As is well documented, he has been treated for severe depression in recent years," Flind said in a statement, according to the BBC.

"The events of the last few days have greatly worsened matters, he has suffered another serious episode and is now receiving in-patient hospital care where he'll stay for the foreseeable future."

The story first broke on Friday when the Sun tabloid reported a leading BBC presenter had paid a young person 35,000 pounds ($45,000) for explicit photos over three years, beginning when the person was 17.

The BBC suspended the presenter but did not name him. Several BBC stars then took to social media to say they were not involved after speculation swirled online.

The BBC came under fire as it struggled to investigate the claim against the presenter, protect the person's privacy, respond publicly to the allegations, and not anger other presenters who fell under suspicion.

The age of consent for sex in England is 16, but images of someone under 18 can be considered child pornography.

London's Metropolitan Police said earlier on Wednesday it had concluded its assessment into the allegations and found there was no indication a criminal offence had been committed.

"There is no further police action," it said.

The BBC said it would continue with its internal investigation into the allegations.

In an email to staff, BBC Director General Tim Davie sai...

KUALA LUMPUR: A roadmap that stretches from 2023 to 2025, known as MAMPAN25, was launched today as a new strategic plan for the Armed Forces Fund Board (LTAT) to face economic challenges, safeguard the social welfare of its contributors, and drive the transformation towards a sustainable savings fund.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said it is also a restructuring, reassessment and relaunching of its business plan, as there are numerous issues that require re-evaluation and a re-strategising effort from the entire LTAT family, including subsidiary companies.

He said MAMPAN25 comes with four main thrusts, namely Growth, Resilience, Impact and Trust; with a commitment to better manage the retirement funds of military personnel.

"The world is changing rapidly and drastically, and in the corporate world, we cannot remain static.

"We need to reposition ourselves, reassess our business pillars and organisational structure to remain relevant and competitive in the mainstream," he said after launching MAMPAN25 here today.

Mohamad said the launch of MAMPAN25 is also to ensure that LTAT and its subsidiary companies continue to operate robustly and, at the same time, maintain their commitment to providing steady dividend returns to military personnel who contribute to their retirement funds.

He said the ministry has been monitoring LTAT and its subsidiaries to ensure that they continue to ensure the wellbeing of military personnel as outlined in the core values of the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF).

The minister stressed that MINDEF will not allow any organisation under its purview to become stagnant and unproductive as they should move together towards a better and brighter future.

He said the LTAT's privatisation of Boustead Holding, for example, is not an end but more of a restructuring process.

"Taking a step back does not mean we are losing, but it signifies our preparation to move forward. Look at our assets, and there are assets that are like planting oil palm in a gold mine. We have to unlock that. This is a process of adding value. This is what we want to do in LTAT," he said.

Meanwhile, LTAT chief executive officer Datuk Nazim Rahman said MAMPAN25 is evidence of LTAT's readiness to mov...

KUALA LUMPUR: "Langkah mayat saya dulu, biar saya uruskan (Pharmaniaga Bhd)."

'Langkah mayat saya sebelum beli Pharmaniaga'

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said following the arrest of former 1MDB lawyer Jasmine Loo Ai Swan, a close associate of Jho Low, on Friday, more arrests can be expected soon. - BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have never stopped investigating the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) case or ceased its hunt for fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said.

He said following the arrest of former 1MDB lawyer Jasmine Loo Ai Swan, a close associate of Jho Low, on Friday, more arrests can be expected soon.

"If police can have Jasmin Loo in custody, we can arrest others involved with 1MDB and Jho Low anytime.

"There is no need to know where they are at as this involves police tactical matters,' he told a special media conference in Bukit Aman here today.

On Loo's arrest, Razarudin said the woman was arrested after presenting herself with her lawyer at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters to record her statement.

"PDRM are still investigating the case and are cooperating with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the Securities Commission in the event the suspect is in the wanted category," he said.

Razarudin said Loo is being investigated under Section 409 of the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust.

Loo was 1MDB's former executive director of group and is believed to be in Low's inner circle.

Bloomberg previously reported that Swiss investigators conducting a criminal investigation into the 1MDB scandal were hunting executive director Casey Tang and Jasmine Loo in connection with the alleged illegal transfer of US$700 million.

On Dec 4, 2018, the Magistrate's Court issued arrest warrants against Jho Low, Jasmine Loo, Casey, former 1MDB official Geh Choh Heng and Eric Tan Kim Loong.

The arrest warrants were issued after they failed to appear in court to face seven charges of money laundering related to 1MDB.

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister's Political Secretary Ahmad Farhan Fauzi today lodged a police report against three individuals for issuing and spreading false and defamatory statements against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The three individuals are political activist Badrul Hisham Shaharin or better known as Che'gu Bard, Bersatu Supreme Council member Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan and blogger Raggie Jessy Rithaudeen.

Ahmad Farhan said the report was lodged over the remarks made by Che'gu Bard and the speech by Wan Saiful at a recent event in Kedah pertaining to the personal residence and the vehicles used by Anwar which allegedly belonged to a businessman.

"All those statements are baseless, ill-intent and politically motivated," he told reporters after lodging the report at Putrajaya Police headquarters here today. Also present was Anwar's lawyer Datuk S. Sankara Narayanan Nair.

Putrajaya Police chief ACP A Asmadi Abdul Aziz, when contacted, confirmed receiving the report, saying that an investigation will be carried out.

Meanwhile, Sankara Narayanan Nair said they have evidence and related documents on the lease agreement relating to Anwar's house in Sungai Long, Kajang, but they could not be made public.

"The property he lives in is on a lease agreement by him for 10 years, signed in 2020 way before he becomes the prime minister. The lease is properly paid and no argument about who owns it," he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit hit its lowest level in seven years against the British pound when it fell to 6.0430 as of 7am this morning.

The ringgit previously hit RM6 to 1 pound on Tuesday, falling to 6.0164.

The last time the ringgit declined to RM6 against the pound was on 15 February 2016, when the exchange rate was at 6.0481.

However, the ringgit is not alone as the pound and the United States (US) dollar have strengthened against other regional currencies this year.

The pound has been one of the top performing currencies so far this year.

It is based on expectations that the Bank of England will raise interest rates further as wages rise faster than expected in May, while inflation remains high at 8.7 percent in May, the highest in the G7 countries.

Wage growth rose 7.3 percent in the three months to May from a year earlier, driven by a strong increase in private sector wage growth.

While wage growth picked up quickly, the unemployment rate rose to 4.0 percent in the three months to May, from 3.8 percent previously.

Against the US dollar, the pound rose 9.0 percent over the course of one year.

Meanwhile, regional currencies such as the Indonesian rupiah saw the pound increase by about 9.74 percent in the same period.

HONG KONG: Hong Kong's environment and ecology department head said the city will ban seafood imports from 10 Japanese prefectures if Tokyo goes ahead with a plan to discharge treated radioactive water from the crippled Fukushima plant into the sea.

Tse Chin-wan, Secretary for Environment and Ecology told reporters on Wednesday that a ban would include imports of all live, frozen, refrigerated, dried or otherwise preserved aquatic products, sea salt, and unprocessed or processed seaweed.

The measures come a day after Hong Kong leader John Lee said that the city would ban sea products from a "large number" of Japanese prefectures if Tokyo went ahead with the waste water discharge.

The city is Japan's second largest market, after mainland China, for agricultural and fisheries exports. In 2022, Japan exported 75.5 billion yen ($536 million fishery products to Hong Kong, according to Japanese government statistics.

Japan's plan, approved by the U.N. nuclear watchdog, has faced opposition at home and abroad over concerns of food safety. The country insists the releases will be safe and meet global standards.

Japan has made a strong request to Hong Kong officials not to tighten restrictions on food imports from Japan because of its plan to discharge treated radioactive water from its Fukushima nuclear plant, Tokyo's foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

Tse and chief secretary Eric Chan said they met the Japanese consul general in Hong Kong to discuss the issue and emphasized that the government has a rigorous system to ensure food safety.

The ban would apply to imported aquatic products from Tokyo, Fukushima, Chiba, Tochigi, Ibaraki, Gunma, Miyagi, Niigata, Nagano and Saitama, Tse said.

PUTRAJAYA: The government has introduced a subsidy initiative worth RM300 for the purchase of flight tickets for public university students for domestic routes between the Peninsula, Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan that will begin on Aug 15.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said this would be implemented through a credit shell where participating airlines will issue a digital voucher worth RM300 to each eligible student to redeem for purchasing flight tickets for domestic routes.

"This subsidy is only valid for the purchase of one-way and return economy class flight tickets between the students' place of origin and place of study," he told a media conference, here, today.

Loke said the initiative, which the Cabinet agreed to at today's meeting, would benefit over 56,000 public university students nationwide, with the overall cost estimated to be RM16.8 million.

He said that if the ticket purchased costs less than RM300, the balance of the digital voucher could be used for the next ticket purchase.

He said the vouchers can only be used to purchase Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Batik Air, Firefly and MYAirline flight tickets and the deadline to redeem the vouchers for the purchase of flight tickets is Oct 31.

To apply for the subsidy for the purchase of flight tickets, public university students must check their eligibility through the Transport Ministry's website, which will be notified later," he said.

"If they are not eligible, they can appeal to the Ministry of Higher Education through their respective varsities or apply for a subsidy for the purchase of flight tickets on the websites of the selected airlines," he said.

Home Minister, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail informed that a remand order was also issued to the woman on July 8.

"The remand order is based on an investigation under Section 409 of the Penal Code, thus the PDRM certainly has a number of matters to investigate.

"At the same time through lawyer Jasmine Loo Ai Swan informed that he is ready to cooperate to help PDRM and the government," he said here in a Special Media Conference here on Wednesday.

In November 2021, the public prosecutor filed a notice of motion to forfeit two cars, an Audi and a Volkswagen New Beetle, money amounting to RM22,600 and a condominium in Mont Kiara here belonging to Jasmine.

Jasmine is said to be a close associate of fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho or Jho Low who was also involved in the 1MDB financial scandal and was listed as a wanted person after escaping and his whereabouts are unknown.

PUTRAJAYA: The Cabinet has decided that the process of repatriating travelers who have been denied entry (NTL) to the country will be managed by the airline without involving third parties.

Home Minister, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, said the decision made by the Cabinet was in line with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) convention.

He explained that, according to ICAO, airlines are responsible for managing the repatriation of NTL travelers, including covering the cost of food and drink as well as flight tickets.

"So the Cabinet today agreed for the repatriation process to be managed by the airline, without going through a third party.

"This means that this is in line with the Immigration Act 1959/1963 and in line with ICAO, which clearly mentions that they are the parties that should take responsibility.

"When a traveler wants to depart from the last location, the airline is responsible before he issues a 'boarding pass'.

"The airline has to know the status of the traveler whether he has a return ticket and then can issue a 'boarding pass' . That is a normal process at the international level," he said in a special media conference here on Wednesday.

PETALING JAYA: The action of two Vietnamese single mothers who offered sex services to a police officer with the rank of corporal last month led to a fine when they were each fined RM2,000 by the Magistrate's Court here on Wednesday.

Tu Dong Thuy Hoa and Thi Lan Giang, both 33 years old, working as massage therapists, were given the sentence after pleading guilty to the charges read before Magistrate Zhafran Rahim Hamzah.

The court ordered them to be imprisoned for two months, if they failed to pay the fine.

According to the charges, they were charged with seeking subscriptions for prostitution by offering sex services to policemen with the rank of corporal in a hotel room in Taman Equine, Seri Kembangan, at 6pm, 27 June.

The charge is made under Section 372B of the Penal Code which carries a maximum jail term of one year or a fine, or both upon conviction.

During the proceedings, the lawyer, Jasmine Faith, who represented the two accused, appealed for her client to be fined for having to support each other's children.

"They have just started working as masseurs for two days but due to the offence, they have been remanded for 15 days, thus making this matter a lesson," he said.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Public Prosecutor, Siti Maryam Jamilah Md Kamal asked for appropriate punishment as a lesson.

PUTRAJAYA: Travelers from Bangladesh, Pakistan and India are the most subject to notices of refusal to enter Malaysia, said Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

According to the Minister of Home Affairs, from January to June last year, more than 3.98 million travelers were recorded arriving through the entrance of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

"This is the KLIA entrance only, we have 150 entrances nationwide but this refers to the KLIA entrance data, where we received a record of 3,984,823 traveler arrivals.

"During the same period, the number of travelers subject to entry refusal notices was 14,977 compared to 3.9 million, which is approximately 80 people per day on average or about 0.37 percent.

"The three nationalities that recorded the status of being subject to the highest entry refusal notice are Bangladesh, Pakistan, followed by India. These are the three highest lists of travellers," he said in a Special Media Conference here.

Commenting further, Saifuddin said that among the main reasons for the refusal of entry was not having a return ticket and a clear address of residence, as well as not having enough cash, in addition to security aspects.

He said that as of 2pm yesterday, a check with the Director General of the Immigration Department (JIM), Datuk Ruslin Jusoh found that at least 48 people had been detained today.

He explained that most NTL travelers are detained between one and seven days, depending on how quickly their repatriation process is made.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia on Tuesday said it was seeking proposals from private firms to develop a high-speed railway between its capital Kuala Lumpur and neighbouring Singapore, reviving a multi-billion-dollar project called off more than two years ago.

Malaysia and Singapore had cancelled a plan to build a 350-kilometre (217-mile) rail line connecting the two countries after they failed to agree on several proposed changes to the project.

At the time the project was estimated to cost around $17 billion and companies from China, Japan, South Korea and Europe had expressed an interest in contracts to build, operate and finance the trains and rail assets.

In a statement on Tuesday, MyHSR Corp, a Malaysian-government owned entity responsible for the project, called for the private sector to submit proposals to develop and operate the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High Speed Rail project via a public-private partnership model.

MyHSR invited local and international firms and consortia to submit proposals.

"(The process) marks the government's initiative to reactivate the ... project via new funding mechanisms and implementation models in efforts to further improve the rail transport infrastructure and to invigorate the national economy," it said.

Singapore's transport ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Singapore indicated last year the country is open to fresh proposals from Malaysia on the project, according to media.

KUALA LUMPUR: The police confirmed that a detainee had escaped from the lock-up at the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters (IPD) here yesterday.

Without revealing further details, Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the incident happened at 9.40 am when the police were in the process of taking him to court.

"The police had launched a search operation to track down the detainee. We were able to locate and re-arrest him at 1.50 pm on the same day," he told a press conference after attending the monthly assembly at the Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent Headquarters here today.

He further said that an investigation was ongoing to determine whether there was any negligence involving six personnel on duty when the suspect escaped.

Meanwhile, Mohd Shuhaily said over 26,000 summonses were issued in Op Hormat Undang-Undang Jalan Raya conducted by Kuala Lumpur traffic police as of July 9.

He said the offence with the highest number of summonses was traffic obstruction, with 18,931.

A total of 86 individuals were detained for various criminal and traffic offences and 99 vehicles were confiscated, he added.

"My concern is about foreigners who are riding motorcycles without a licence. Although they possess relevant documents, they do not have (driving) licence," he said, adding that many of them rent vehicles from local citizens or receive them from their employers.

Najib Razak Highlights The Increase in Price of McDonalds Menu Items BEST FBKL

Former PM Najib Razak Raises Concerns About Increasing Prices Of McDonalds

McDonalds increasing the prices every yeas, has raised a few eyebrows.

Najib Razak highlighted this in a social media post.

The prices of McDonalds menu items, has increased between 40 to 86% since 2017, he urged the relevant Minister to look into the matter.

Source: Facebook

Najib decided to compare the prices of some of the popular McDonalds items from December 2017 versus now. As noted by the former PM, the prices of the meals have experienced substantial increment in recent years. For instance, the price of the all-time favourite McChicken burger has witnessed a 86% price hike, rising from RM5 to RM9.29. Even the McNuggets Happy Meal is now 68% more expensive, with the price jumping from RM6.80 to RM11.42.

Have the prices gone down after the GST (Goods and Services Tax) was abolished? Where is the RM50 full trolley gang after GE14? Hopefully the Minister can keep track on why the prices of McDonalds keep increasing every year because this is shocking, Najib wrote in his post.

Clive Palmer launches second ISDS case against the Australian government with third case likely "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

12 July, 2023:  The Attorney Generals Department has confirmed that Clive Palmers company, Zeph Investment which is registered in Singapore, has lodged a second Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) claim suing the Australian government for $41.3 billion under the 2012 ASEAN-Australia New Zealand Free Trade Agreement.

ISDS is a mechanism within some trade agreements which enables foreign (but not local) investors to sue governments for millions and even billions of dollars of compensation if they can argue, among other reasons, that a change in domestic law or policy has reduced the value of their investment.

Clive Palmer is claiming to be a Singaporean investor, as Zeph Investment is registered in Singapore, to utilise the ISDS mechanism to lodge his claim. He is alleging that the refusal of coal exploration permits in Queensland, which were refused on environmental grounds, entitles him to ISDS compensation.

Clive Palmers most recent ISDS case is just one of the two new prospective ISDS cases revealed in the May budget papers. The Attorney Generals Department has confirmed that Zeph Investment is expected to lodge a third ISDS case.

These cases follow two previous cases that Clive Palmer has taken against the Australian government. In October 2021, Clive Palmer lost his $27.8 billion High Court (non-ISDS) case against the Western Australian government over a disputed mining lease. He moved assets to  Singapore to take this case to an ISDS tribunal and in April 2023 he sued the Australian government for almost $300 billion.

Clive Palmers latest case means he is currently suing the Australian government for $337.3 billion under ISDS, not accounting for a potential third case. Even if Clive Palmer loses these cases, it can be expected to cost the Australian government billions in legal fees. A previous ISDS case between Phillip Morris and the Australian government over plain cigarette packaging cost Australia than $12 billion in legal fees and over 5 years to resolve.
