We at PPT are bemused by the social media discussion around the United Front of Thammasat and Demonstration calling on people to sign a petition in support of the eight parties in the Pheu Thai-led coalition standing firmly together until the tenure of this group of senators ends in 10 months time.

The Bangkok Post has reported that the Thai Sang Thai and Fair parties have proposed the eight coalition allies wait for the five-year term of the military-appointed Senate to end in May next year, so the MFP alliance could have its prime ministerial candidate elected by the House of Representatives alone.

But what does this mean? Stick together as a non-government? Stand firmly together as a majority opposition? Does it mean the selection of a new prime minister be delayed for another 10 months? Would it mean allowing Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha to stay on as prime minister, becoming Thailands longest serving PM?

What this would do is create even more constitutional problems and deliver even more power to the politicized Constitutional Court.

Without a popular government, who would design the selection of the next group of senators? Think about all the ways that the conservatives could engineer another ratbag senate under Section 107 of the current constitution.

The prime minister has numerous duties under the constitution. What happens in the ten months? Prayuth maintains control allowing no progressive legislation? Or does all the legislation go into limbo?

Could such a delay unleash crisis provisions in the constitution? Or could it just unleash the military?

We may be dumb and missing something, but we still think a way out is for standing firm as a parliamentary opposition and force a new election and a huge election victory. The risk is a coup somewhere along this path as public discontent rises.

The planned joint sitting of parliament to vote for a new prime minister has been indefinitely postponed awaiting a Constitutional Court ruling on the rejected renomination of Move Forward Party leader Pita Limjaroenrat.

This is due to the illegal actions whatever the dopes at the court decide to conjure of the military-appointed senators and the military-monarchy alliance of rightist parties.

Pathetically, Wan Muhamad Noor Matha confirmed that parliament and constitution are unimportant when he bleated that:

Another reason for delaying the joint sitting was that many elected MPs and senators were worried they would not be able to attend ceremonies to celebrate the Kings birthday in their respective provinces on Friday if the sitting was prolonged.

Whatever the court decides/is told to decide, it is unlikely to make much difference for Pita or his party.

A minority government may well be the outcome.

All of this allows more wheeling and dealing behind closed doors that will probably do nothing to promote the interests of the people.
