Fragile Market Risks Rise Up Corporate Agendas "IndyWatch Feed War"

The fighting in Ukraine may be far from over, yet plans are already underway for the post-war reconstruction of the country, with companies and governments set to contribute. Elsewhere, post-conflict rebuilding and recovery initiatives have made varying degrees of progress in Ethiopia, South Sudan and Iraq.

The commercial opportunities in the aftermath of wars and natural disasters can be considerable. But the fragility of these jurisdictions means multinationals must ensure their activities support stability and development, otherwise they risk seeing early business gains evaporate.

Countries recovering from destructive events are keen on foreign direct investment to rebuild shattered infrastructure and stimulate economic growth with companies able to play a constructive role in stabilization efforts. In so doing, they gain reputations as responsible economic players, winning the trust of local customers and authorities.

But corporate missteps, advertent or not, can incur operational and reputational damage particularly in post-disaster settings in the sometimes-chaotic rush to start relief and reconstruction efforts.

In the wake of the Asian tsunami, there were reports of private contractors in Indonesia using substandard building materials to increase profits. Following the Haitian earthquake, contractors came under scrutiny over the number of locals benefiting from cash-for-work programs aimed at promoting the stabilization process.

In South Sudan and Iraq, energy majors have buttressed these countries oil-and-gas-dependent economies hydrocarbon extraction helping them recover, albeit fitfully, from devastating wars. But in a number of instances, commercial engagement has come under intense scrutiny, with some firms linked to human rights abuses in South Sudan and extensive pollution in southern Iraq.

Post-conflict and post-disaster jurisdictions are some of the most challenging markets to enter from a risk perspective. Companies must identify and mitigate...

Rugby League is Powerful Tool to unite Papua New Guinea: Marape "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has emphasised the potential of rugby league as a potent unifying force for Papua New Guinea during his address at the Australian National Rugby League (NRL) Bid Corporate dinner in Port Moresby on Wednesday, July 19, 2023. The event took place as PNG seeks to secure its position as the 18th team in the NRL for the 2025 season.

Rugby League is Powerful Tool to unit Papua New Guinea: Marape

The dinner, graced by the presence of Australian Minister for International Development and the Pacific, Hon. Pat Conroy, witnessed executives of major companies, Governors, Ministers, and MPs expressing their support for PNGs NRL Bid. Hon. Conroy reiterated the backing of Australian Prime Minister Hon. Anthony Albanese and his Government for this endeavor.

Drawing inspiration from a quote by Nelson Mandela, the late South African leader who eloquently stated, Sport has the power to change the world It laughs in the face of all types of discrimination, Prime Minister Marape underscored rugby leagues significance as the common denominator that has the potential to unite the nation.

In the PNG context, rugby league is the common denominator that binds and holds our society together, especially at the national level, Prime Minister Marape stated.

He further added, This is evident when our national team takes to the field. Even during challenging times, the pride of Papua New Guineans in rallying behind our national team is second to none. As the Government, we recognise that this pursuit will provide a platform to unite the most diverse nation on Planet Earth, under one flag.

The bidding process for a team in the NRL is not solely about rugby league; it is about uniting our nation behind a common focal point, Prime Minister Marape asserted.

This path will be instrumental in keeping our nation united for the next 50 years and beyond, with rugby league as our countrys number one sport...

Das Deutsche Heer am Pazifik (II) "IndyWatch Feed Niugini"

Talisman Sabre

Realistische bungsmglichkeiten

Talisman Sabre 2023 beginnt an diesem Samstag (22.

Migrating orangutan males imitate locals to learn about food: Study "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

JAKARTA Male orangutans that resettle to a new area appear to be imitating the behavior of local individuals in an effort to survive and find a future home range, a new study says. Male orangutans that have reached sexual maturity tend to leave their birthplace and migrate to find a new home where they will adopt different skills of foraging, a group of researchers from universities in Germany, France and Indonesia reported in their recently published paper in the journal Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution. Theyve dubbed the behavior learning skill as peering and described it as when migrant male orangutans intensively observe over a period of time a certain local they have chosen as a role model. Over the last few years, we have gained a pretty good understanding of observational social learning in immature orangutans and other primates so far, Julia Mrchen, a Ph.D. candidate at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior in Konstanz, Germany, who is the lead author of the paper, told Mongabay in an email interview. However, natural learning in adult primates in the wild remains largely uninvestigated. Our results provide evidence that in general adult male orangutans are able to learn and update their already learned knowledge repertoires, when they are confronted with a new and unknown ecology, she said.
