KUALA LUMPUR: Former Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz told the High Court today that Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had asked her to clear his name in relation to RM2.6 billion in his personal bank account.

However, Zeti said she refused to comply with Najib's request because she had no knowledge of the former prime minister's bank account.

"I was called to the Prime Minister's Office. He (Najib) asked me to issue a statement that he did not do anything wrong in relation to his bank account.

"I informed him that I could not issue such a statement because I had no knowledge of the transactions that had taken place in his account. He accepted my decision," said Zeti, the 46th prosecution witness, at the trial of Najib who faces charges of embezzling RM2.3 billion 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) fund.

The former governor said shortly after the meeting, she received a call from a minister who made the same request for him to issue such a statement and she gave the same answer.

Zeti, 76, who was BNM governor for 16 years since 2000, told the court that she did not know about the RM2.6 billion that was deposited into Najib's personal bank account at that time.

"Regarding the allegations made by Najib during his interview with Malaysiakini which was broadcast on 2 July 2018, where he claimed that I knew about the RM2.6 billion in his account at AmIslamic Bank Berhad and that I did not raise any questions about it, I would like to state with It is clear that I was not aware of the transactions made in his account at that time," he said.

Zeti explained that all account holders in the financial system are protected by banking secrecy provisions in legislation, hence, no one can access any account unless the financial institution concerned detects suspicious activity in the account and reports it to the central bank.

He said the allegations made by Najib were false because at the time, she did not know that the sum of RM2.6 billion had been deposited into the former finance minister's account and that the funds belonged to 1MDB.

AMSTERDAM: A fire blazed on Wednesday on a ship off the Dutch coast with nearly 3,000 vehicles, killing one person and injuring several others, the coastguard said.

The fire began on Tuesday night on the 199-metre Panama-registered Fremantle Highway, which was en route from Germany to Egypt, forcing several crew members to jump overboard.

Rescue ships sprayed water onto the burning boat to cool it down, but too much water risked its sinking, the Dutch coastguard said. A salvage vessel hooked on to stop it drifting.

"The fire is most definitely still not controlled. It's a very hard fire to extinguish, possibly because of the cargo the ship was transporting," said Edwin Versteeg, a spokesperson for the Dutch Department Of Waterways and Public Works.

The coastguard said on its website that the cause of the fire was unknown, but a coastguard spokesperson had earlier told Reuters it began near an electric car.

The coastguard said the Fremantle, which had departed from the port of Bremerhaven, had been towed out of shipping lanes and could sink. It was 27 km (17 miles) north of the Dutch island of Ameland when the fire started.

All 23 crew members were evacuated.

A helicopter took some suffering from smoke inhalation to medical facilities on the mainland.

Coastguard spokesperson Edwin Granneman said salvaging experts were trying to work out next steps for the burning boat.

A spokesperson for Shoei Kisen Kaisha, the Japanese ship leasing company that manages the Fremantle, was not immediately available for comment.

The incident was the latest of several fires in recent times on car carriers.

Earlier this month, two New Jersey firefighters were killed and five injured battling a blaze on a cargo ship carrying hundreds of vehicles.

A fire destroyed thousands of luxury cars on a ship off the coast of Portugal's Azores islands in February last year.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will be giving a special appreciation aid of RM300 to civil servants of Grade 56 and below, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced today.

He also announced a similar aid of RM200 to retirees, including those currently receiving their pensions including pension recipients issued under the pension law, EPF retirees who retire from public service, as well as pensionable and non-pensionable veterans.

"This aid will benefit 1.3 million civil servants, including contract appointments, and over a million retirees. With this special aid, we hope civil servants will continue to work diligently in supporting the government's aspirations of implementing reforms," he said when launching the 'MADANI Economy: Empowering the People' initiative here today.

Anwar said the payment of this aid is expected to be made within two weeks from now.

He said the announcement on the special aid is made while the review of the civil servants' salaries and allowances is being done.

Present at the launch were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil, Transport Minister Anthony Loke and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali.

The Prime Minister said the government remains committed to streamlining the remuneration for civil servants, taking into account its financial means.

"(Under the) MADANI Economy initiative, we strive to provide the best services possible and assist the government's fiscal policies in making the streamlining of the civil servants' salaries a reality," he said.

On July 13, the Prime Minister said that the civil servants' remuneration will be streamlined in phases based on the government's financial capacity and that the matter would be proposed to Mohd Zuki and Public Services Department Director-General Datuk Dr Zulkapli Mohamad before the state elections on Aug 12.

Anwar also announced RM100 e-cash credit to all adult Malaysians with an income of RM100,000 per annum and below, based on the earlier success and significant impact of the programme on the people.

He said it was estimated that more than 10 million people in the B40 and M40 groups are eligible for the funds amounting to about RM1 billion.

KUALA LUMPUR: Bekas Gabenor Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz memberitahu Mahkamah Tinggi hari ini bahawa bekas Pengarah Urusan Kumpulan AmBank Group tidak pernah menyebut tentang sebarang derma yang akan disalurkan ke akaun Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak di bank itu.

Zeti, 76, berkata Cheah Tek Kuang telah mengunjunginya di BNM pada 28 Jan 2011 dan memaklumkan bahawa Najib, yang ketika itu Perdana Menteri, membuka akaun dengan AmIslamic Bank Berhad dan memaklumkan bahawa akaunnya akan dirujuk dalam kod untuk ROMS (Sistem Pemantauan Operasi Ringgit).

Semasa membaca pernyataan saksinya, Zeti, saksi pendakwaan ke-46 berkata walaupun akaun itu dikodkan sebagai "AmPrivate Banking - MR" untuk ROMS, pembukaan akaun itu mematuhi peraturan yang ditetapkan, iaitu semua akaun peribadi yang dibuka oleh pemegang akaun mestilah di bawah nama pemegang akaun seperti yang dinyatakan dalam kad pengenalan dan bukan dengan nama lain.

"Tiada apa-apa lagi yang dibincangkan dan pertemuan itu singkat. Sepanjang pertemuan itu, Cheah tidak pernah menyebut sebarang derma yang akan disalurkan ke dalam akaun ini.

"Enam minggu kemudian, Cheah mengeluarkan surat bertarikh 22 Mac 2011 kepada Timbalan Gabenor (ketika itu) Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus dan surat hasrat dilampirkan untuk derma yang dijanjikan daripada Saud Abdulaziz Majid AL Saud yang bertarikh 1 Feb 2011 kepada Najib," kata beliau.

Zeti berkata demikian semasa pemeriksaan utama oleh Timbalan Pendakwa Raya Ahmad Akram Gharib pada perbicaraan kes penyelewengan RM2.3 bilion daripada dana 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) yang dihadapi Najib.

Menurut bekas gabenor BNM itu, selepas menerima surat daripada Cheah pada 22 Mac 2011, tiada maklumat lanjut mengenai akaun Najib diterima daripada Ambank dan tiada maklumat mengenai dana yang telah dihantar ke akaun itu atau dana tersebut tidak teratur atau mencurigakan.

"Seterusnya, dalam surat kepada BNM bertarikh 20 Jun 2013, Najib telah memohon kelulusan FEA (Pentadbiran Pertukaran Asing) untuk meminda jumlah sehingga RM2.26 bilion dalam akaun semasa MYRnya kepada USD bagi tujuan pemulangan/pengiriman keseluruhan jumlah.

KUALA LUMPUR: Mahkamah Tinggi di sini hari ini mendapati bekas Timbalan Pengarah Kanan Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) Sabudin Mohd Salleh bersalah atas dua pertuduhan memperoleh suapan berjumlah RM200,000 bagi mengeluarkan permit kerja.

Hakim K. Muniandy membuat keputusan itu selepas membenarkan rayuan pihak pendakwaan untuk mengetepikan keputusan Mahkamah Sesyen pada 15 Sept 2022, yang membebaskan Sabudin, 61, daripada kedua-dua pertuduhan rasuah itu pada akhir kes pembelaan.

Beliau menetapkan 15 Ogos ini untuk mendengar rayuan tertuduh bagi hukuman yang ringan sebelum mahkamah menjatuhkan hukuman.

Dalam penghakimannya, Muniandy berkata hakim Mahkamah Sesyen telah terkhilaf berhubung undang-undang yang terpakai kepada keterangan saksi pendakwaan ketiga yang bagi semua maksud tidak boleh dianggap sebagai rakan sejenayah menurut Seksyen 52 (1) (a) Akta Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah Malaysia (SPRM).

"Walaupun saksi itu yang memberi rasuah, ia berlaku kerana tuntutan yang dibuat oleh tertuduh untuk mendapatkan tajaan semasa saksi itu menemuinya untuk mengadu belum mendapat kontrak kerja lagi.

CAIRO: A concert by U.S. rapper Travis Scott at the pyramids in Egypt has been cancelled, organiser Live Nation Middle East said on Wednesday, citing production issues.

"Complex production issues meant that the show could not be constructed in the desert," Live Nation said in a statement on social media.

The Friday concert, planned to coincide with the release of his most recent album, had previously had its license withdrawn by the Egyptian musicians' syndicate, which also banned Lebanese band Mashrou Leila in 2017 after rainbow flags in support of the LGBTQ community were flown at its shows.

In June, a Texas grand jury on Thursday declined to press criminal charges against Scott and five others over a 2021 crowd crush at a music festival that left 10 dead and injured thousands.

Famous Irish-born singer and activist Sinead O'Connor has reportedly died at the age of 56.

The news of the 'Nothing Compares 2 U' singer's passing was announced by his family members in a statement on Wednesday.

"It is with great sadness that we would like to announce that Sinead has passed away.

"Family members and friends are deeply saddened and ask not to be disturbed at this time," the statement added.

Sinead O'Connor or her Islamic name, Shuhada' Sadaqat began forging a name in the global music charts in the 90s.

She is best known for the song 'Nothing Compares 2 U' which was written by Prince and released in 1990. It managed to penetrate the main charts of the world and was crowned as the world's number one single by the Billboard Music Awards.

In addition, Rolling Stones magazine listed the song at number 165 in its list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.

She also made history when she became the first woman to win the best music video at the Music Television Awards (MTV) in 1990 through the music video 'Nothing Compares 2 U'.

In addition, Sinead is also known for her vocal advocacy for human rights, including a controversial performance on Saturday Night Live in 1992 as a sign of protest against the sexual abuse of children in the Catholic church.

Sinead converted to Islam in 2018 and changed her name to Shuhada' Sadaqat but continued to perform using her birth name.

She also released a memoir called Rememberings in 2021.

Previously Sinead was hospitalized a week after her son died in early 2022/

She admitted that he was saddened by the death of his son, Shane , 17, and also expressed her desire on Twitter to 'follow in her son's footsteps'.

KUALA LUMPUR: Pemain kriket negara Syazrul Ezat Idrus mempamerkan aksi hebat dalam arena kriket antarabangsa dengan muncul sebagai pemain pertama di dunia mencapai tujuh wiket dalam format perlawanan Twenty20 International (T20I), pada Rabu.

Pemain berusia 32 tahun itu beraksi cemerlang untuk membantu Malaysia memperoleh kemenangan bergaya ke atas China dengan kelebihan lapan wiket dalam perlawanan pembukaan Kelayakan Rantau Asia B Piala Dunia Lelaki T20 2024, di Klang kira-kira 35 kilometer dari sini.

KLANG: Klang akan menjadi bandar raya selepas kerajaan semalam bersetuju dan meluluskan cadangan bagi menaik taraf Majlis Perbandaran Klang (MPK) kepada status Majlis Bandaraya Klang, kata Menteri Pembangunan Kerajaan Tempatan (KPKT) Nga Kor Ming.

Beliau berkata keputusan yang dicapai menerusi Mesyuarat Jemaah Menteri itu bakal menyaksikan MPK sebagai pihak berkuasa tempatan (PBT) keempat berstatus bandar raya di Selangor selepas Majlis Bandaraya Subang Jaya, Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam dan Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya.

"MPK telah ditubuhkan sejak 1890 dan kini telah memenuhi semua kriteria bagi mencapai status bandar raya pada usia 133 tahun. MPK berupaya menyediakan antaranya perkhidmatan yang cemerlang, kemudahan infrastruktur dan utiliti awam yang terbaik serta berkeupayaan membentuk jenama bandar raya yang unik serta berimejkan bandar warisan dan sejarah.

"Penaiktarafan (Klang) sebagai bandar raya ke-20 itu (seluruh negara) bermaksud MPK mempunyai kekuatan kewangan yang mampan untuk menyediakan perkhidmatan perbandaran yang cekap, berkualiti serta bertaraf antarabangsa bagi meningkatkan daya huni dan kesejahteraan rakyat di Klang," katanya kepada pemberita sempena Program Sentuhan Kasih KPKT di sini hari ini.

Nga berkata pengisytiharan Klang sebagai bandar raya akan dilakukan dalam satu majlis selepas mendapat perkenan Sultan Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

Selaras dengan pengumuman penaiktarafan itu, Nga berkata kementeriannya menerusi Program Sentuhan Kasih KPKT turut meluluskan sebanyak 21 projek berjumlah RM5 juta bagi menaik taraf kemudahan awam sekitar PBT tersebut, yang akan bermula dalam kadar segera dan dijangka siap menjelang akhir tahun ini.

IPOH: Video tular yang memaparkan anak ular tedung menyusur di bawah badan seorang kanak-kanak lelaki berusia empat tahun, adalah kejadian dua hari lepas dan ular itu telah berjaya ditangkap.

Penolong Pengarah Bahagian Operasi Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia (JBPM) Perak, Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad berkata kanak-kanak tersebut juga dilaporkan selamat.

"Kejadian berlaku di rumah pengasuh kanak-kanak itu di Taman Serai Perdana, Bagan Serai (Perak). Bomba menerima panggilan daripada pengasuh itu pada 11.28 pagi, 24 Julai lalu.

"Setibanya di tempat kejadian didapati seekor anak ular senduk berada di bawah kanak-kanak di ruang tamu. Tindakan segera anggota bomba memastikan keadaan selamat," katanya dalam kenyataan di sini hari ini.

Sabarodzi berkata anggota telah menggunakan penyepit ular untuk menangkap ular senduk tersebut dan berjaya ditangkap serta dibawa ke lokasi yang sesuai dan dilepaskan," katanya.

Terdahulu tular di laman sosial video berdurasi 19 saat memaparkan seekor ular senduk menyusur di bawah badan seorang kanak-kanak lelaki yang sedang berbaring di ruang tamu.

Video tersebut telah ditonton 4.3 juta pengguna dan menimbulkan kegusaran dan persoalan dalam kalangan netizen.

BANDAR PERMAISURI: Seorang pembantu kedai dijatuhi hukuman denda RM7,000 oleh Mahkamah Sesyen Setiu di sini, hari ini selepas mengaku bersalah melakukan hantaran video lucah kepada bekas teman wanitanya tahun lepas.

Hakim Ahmad Fadhli Mahmud menjatuhkan hukuman itu selepas Muhammad Iqyyum Basri, 25, mengaku salah terhadap pertuduhan mengikut Seksyen 233(1) (a) Akta Komunikasi dan Multimedia 1998 (Akta 588) yang boleh dihukum mengikut Seksyen 233 (3) akta sama.

Jika sabit kesalahan tertuduh boleh didenda tidak lebih RM50,000 atau penjara maksima setahun atau kedua-duanya sekali dan boleh juga didenda selanjutnya RM1,000 bagi setiap hari kesalahan itu diteruskan selepas pensabitan.

Mengikut pertuduhan, Muhammad Iqyyum didakwa secara sedar membuat dan memulakan penghantaran komunikasi iaitu video yang lucah sifatnya dengan niat untuk menyakiti hati orang lain menggunakan aplikasi WhatsApp.

Video itu kemudiannya dilihat pada 8 Mac 2022, pukul 8.24 malam di No. 40, Kampung Padang Serai, Guntong di sini.

Hakim turut memerintahkan supaya tertuduh yang berasal dari Senawang, Negeri Sembilan dipenjara tiga bulan jika tidak membayar denda dikenakan, namun tertuduh membayar denda berkenaan.

Pendakwaan dikendalikan Pegawai Pendakwa Suruhanjaya Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia (MCMC) Siti Hajar Sulaiman, manakala tertuduh tidak diwakili peguam.

KUALA LUMPUR: The political secretary to Fahmi Fadzil, the Communications and Digital Minister today confirmed making a report against Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris or 'Sir Azri' following a slanderous statement relating to Good Vibes Festival.

The report was lodged by Abdullah Izhar Mohamed Yusof at 11.12 am at Pantai police station on a 3.24 seconds video on Facebook by Wan Muhammad Azri or better known as 'Papagomo' which allegedly slandered and disparaged the government by saying that 'The 1975' incident was staged by the government.

Abdullah Izhar in a statement today said the report was made to enable police to expedite investigation on the Facebook account of Sir Azri as well as the man who slandered the government in the video.

"I also urged police to investigate all social media platforms owned by Sir Azri to ensure the defamation or fake news is not disseminated to Malaysians. The act will only threaten the peace and harmony of the races and religion," he said.

In the video, there was a conversation between the Facebook Account with a man claiming to be a former crew of the concert organiser.

The statement also said the special branch had obtained the statement of the complainant and the report was made to strongly deny the slanders made by the individual involved.

The complainant was reported as having seen the Facebook post at 5.51 pm at the office of the Lermbah Pantai MP yesterday.

Commenting on 'The 1975' incident, he said the government had taken steps immediately to cancel the festival but the issue was manipulated to become a platform for a handful of people with political motives to topple the government.

"Therefore, the authorities should take form actions against the Facebook account owner known as Sir Azri or Papagomo so that it would not be followed by other parties to slander the government," he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: The hosting of a concert by leading rock band from the United Kingdom, Muse, at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium (SNBJ) this Saturday (July 29) will not affect the replacement process of the pitch with Zeon Zeoysia grass, which is currently underway.

Perbadanan Stadium Malaysia (PSM) Chief Executive Officer Mohd Faidz Sanusi said so far the new grass has not been planted while the surface of the SNBJ pitch which is covered in sand will be protected with a 'pitch cover' throughout the concert titled Will of The People World Tour 2023.

"It is not affected (the grass replacement process), there is no more grass, only the drainage system has been settled.

"After the end of the Muse concert, the contractor will start planting new grass from Aug 1 and it will take two weeks," he said at the Kuala Lumpur Sports City (KLSC) 25th anniversary celebration press conference here last night.

Muse, which became popular through the songs Time Is Running Out, Supermassive Black Hole and Starlight, rocked Stadium Negara through their debut concert in Malaysia in 2007.

In the meantime, Mohd Faidz expects the grass replacement process to be fully ready by the end of September and the pitch will then be used for the Pestabola Merdeka tournament this October.

Besides the Harimau Malaya (Malaysia's national team), the Pestabola Merdeka, which is being organised again after a 10-year hiatus, will involve India, Palestine and Lebanon as the main challengers to the Kim Pan Gon-led squad.

At the same time, Mohd Faidz said the construction of the nursery next to the Bukit Jalil National Hockey Stadium had also reached a progress level of more than 50 percent.

"Before, if the pitch was damaged we would fix it near the stadium ourselves, but after this we can remove the damaged patch and replace it with a new one from the nursery," he said.

Meanwhile, PSM chairman Datuk Hans Isaac is leaving it to the contractor to determine the appropriate time for the pitch to be ready for use after the grass replacement process has been successfully done.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) has objected to a Sarawakian woman's application for leave to initiate a judicial review to seek for the Federal Territory Registrar of Muallaf to remove her name from the Register of Muallaf.

Federal Counsel Mohammad Sallehuddin Md Ali told the High Court that the application was not open to judicial review under Article 121 (1A) of the Federal Constitution, saying that the application was 'frivolous and vexatious and should be dismissed by the court'.

The woman's counsel, Iqbal Harith Liang argued that the application was not barred by Article 121 (1A) of the Federal Constitution.

"The Registrar of Muallaf's legal duty to decide the applicant's application to convert out of Islam is implied in Section 89 of the Administration of Islamic Law (Federal Territories) Act 1993 (Act 505). The applicant prays for leave to be granted for judicial review proceedings to be commenced against the respondents," he added.

After hearing the submissions from both parties, Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Md Shahid fixed Sept 21 to deliver his decision.

The 26-year-old woman filed the application on April 20 and named the Federal Territory Registrar of Muallaf, the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) and the government as the respondents.

Born to Christian parents, she sought a declaration that the Administration of Islamic Law (Federal Territories) Act 1993 (Act 505) gives jurisdiction to the first respondent (Registrar of Muallaf) to declare that a person is no longer a Muslim.

She also requested that her name be cancelled from the Register of Muallaf immediately, adding that its refusal or delay to make decisions on her application filed on Jan 30, Feb 20 and March 17, 2023, is irrational and unreasonable.

In her supporting affidavit the woman said on Aug 18, 2017, she converted to Islam and registered as a mualaf after a Malay Muslim man asked for her hand in marriage.

However, on Jan 27 last year, she pledged in an affidavit that she wanted to leave Islam and return as a Christian and applied to have her name removed from the registry to which the Registrar of Mualaf has yet to reply...

KUALA LUMPUR: Pasukan Petugas Agensi-Agensi Penguatkuasa Malaysia (MATF) yang diketuai Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah Malaysia (SPRM) menahan seorang ahli perniagaan bergelar Datuk dan sekutunya dalam satu operasi besar-besaran Isnin lalu.

Operasi itu sekali gus melumpuhkan satu sindiket rasuah, pecah amanah, penyeludupan barang-barang haram dan pengurangan cukai tidak sah, pada 24 Julai 2023.

Dalam serbuan itu, MATF turut menyita wang tunai kira-kira RM38 juta, emas dianggarkan 200 kilogram bernilai kira-kira RM60 juta selain 17 kereta mewah antaranya berjenama Maserati, Ferrari dan Mercedes Benz.

Serbuan berkenaan dilakukan serentak di 34 lokasi di Kuala Lumpur dan Selangor dengan melibatkan kekuatan 315 pegawai pelbagai agensi.

Ketika dihubungi, Ketua Pesuruhjaya SPRM Tan Sri Azam Baki mengesahkan penahanan tersebut dan kes disiasat di bawah Akta SPRM 2009, Akta Pencegahan Pengubahan Wang Haram, Pencegahan Pembiayaan Keganasan dan Hasil Daripada Aktiviti Haram (AMLATFPUAA)2001, Akta Percukaian 1967 dan Akta Kastam 1967.

Operasi yang diberi nama Op 82S merupakan kes pertama yang dijalankan MATF yang dipengerusikan oleh Peguam Negara.

PETALING JAYA : PKR grassroot members in Kota Anggerik are unhappy with a decision by the party to field Najwan Halimi for the state seat following a recent comment he made which was laced with a racial slur.

Najwan courted controversy earlier this month after describing Parti Sosialis Malaysia as an Indian estate party. The deputy chief of Shah Alam PKR later took full responsibility for his statement and apologised.

A member who spoke on condition of anonymity said naming Najwan reflects badly on the party.

He also said Najwans nomination may cost PKR to lose votes among the Indian community.

Fielding someone who has made racist comments shows that the party is not bothered with its core values of fighting for all races.

Im an Indian myself and was left speechless when Anwar Ibrahim announced Najwan as the candidate, the source said, adding that many Indians in the party were uneasy about his candidacy.

Anwar has since defended Najwans selection, saying people make mistakes. The PKR president added that he had the final say in such matters.

But the source said Anwar, who is also the prime minister, should understand that this sort of justification gives the impression that PKR is no different from PAS.

DAP's decision to drop seven incumbents, including five Penang State Government Excos, from contesting in the state PRN is a reform process implemented to ensure that the party remains dynamic and relevant in politics.

DAP Secretary General Anthony Loke said that the process is also a process that is expected to bring new life and it is something that every political party should do.

He explained that DAP also takes a balanced approach so that the Penang PRN candidates have new faces and old faces so that they can together build strength in the state.

"DAP will not hesitate in this process, because if we fail to implement this reform process our party will become irrelevant.

"We don't want to reach a stage where we are already behind before we make reforms," he said in a press conference after announcing the Penang and Kedah DAP candidates for the 15th PRN, here today.

Among the seven incumbents dropped by DAP from contesting in the Penang PRN include the five Excos of the state government administration namely Phee Boon Poh (Sungai Puyu); Soon Lip Chee (Bagan Jermal); Chong Eng (Pangkalan Kota), Yeoh Soon Hin (Terubong Swamp) and Dr. P. Ramasamy (Perai).

According to Anthony, the reform process in which there are DAP figures dropped will be done every time the election takes place.

"One day I may also be replaced, so I want to state that the party is bigger than any leader, there is no leader who cannot be replaced, even Lim Kit Siang retired," he said.

In the meantime, when commenting on DAP figures including Ramasamy and Chong Eng who were dropped, Anthony said that the party made such considerations to give way and opportunity to new face candidates to serve the community.

"There are a number of figures such as Ramasamy who has served three terms as Deputy Chief Minister, while Chong Eng has served a total of six terms as an assemblyman and Member of Parliament since 1995.

"So, there is a need that we feel we need to give a chance to new faces, that's what we have decided," he said.

According to a source who spoke to Free Malaysia Today (FMT), Malik was detained by MACC in the morning under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (Amla).

Hakim Suzana Hussin memutuskan demikian selepas mendapati pihak pendakwaan gagal membuktikan kes prima facie terhadap Wafiy Abd Aziz, 38, di akhir kes pendakwaan.

"Sehubungan itu, mahkamah memerintahkan tertuduh dilepas dan dibebaskan daripada pertuduhan itu dan wang jaminan (RM12,000) dikembalikan," katanya.

Perbicaraan kes itu bermula pada Ogos 2021 dengan 24 saksi pendakwaan memberikan keterangan.

Wafiy, didakwa menggunakan jawatan itu untuk mendapatkan suapan, dengan meluluskan bayaran baucar EMGS bertarikh 3 Jun 2019 berjumlah RM12,175 kepada Mileeya Enterprise, untuk bekalan Kurma For Ramadhan Gift yang mana pemilik syarikat tersebut merupakan saudara tertuduh.

Seksyen itu memperuntukkan hukuman penjara maksimum 20 tahun dan denda tidak kurang daripada lima kali ganda jumlah atau nilai suapan yang menjadi hal perkara kesalahan itu, jika suapan itu dapat dinilai atau berbentuk wang atau RM10,000 mengikut mana-mana yang lebih tinggi, jika sabit kesalahan.

Dalam ciapan di akaun Twitternya, Jocelyn yang kini menetap di Amerika Syarikat (AS) mengalu-alukan The 1975 yang kini memasuki senarai sebagai orang yang disenarai hitam oleh kerajaan Malaysia seperti yang dikenakan padanya.

Tidak cukup dengan itu, Jocelyn juga mempersoalkan kenapa The 1975 tidak dikesan oleh polis antarabangsa (Interpol) iaitu tindakan yang sama dibuat pihak berkuasa Malaysia ke atasnya.

"Selamat datang Matty Healy ke dalam senarai yang disekat oleh Malaysia. Bagaimanapun, mana arahan supaya dia ditahan dan INTERPOL digesa mengesan di mana dia berada kerana dikatakan melanggar undang-undang Malaysia ketika berada di negara itu?

PUTRAJAYA: Presiden Filipina Ferdinand Marcos Jr. memulakan Lawatan Negara ke Malaysia mulai Selasa hingga 27 Julai.

Kunjungan itu merupakan lawatan sulung beliau ke negara ini.

Marcos akan diberikan sambutan negara oleh Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah di Istana Negara pada Rabu.

"Presiden Marcos Jr. akan menghadap Yang di-Pertuan Agong, diikuti Majlis Santapan Negara bagi meraikan presiden serta delegasinya," menurut kenyataan Kementerian Luar.

Marcos diiringi isteri Louise Araneta-Marcos dan delegasi yang terdiri Setiausaha Kabinet, ahli politik dan pegawai kanan kerajaan Filipina.

Menurut kenyataan itu, Marcos turut dijadual bertemu Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, dengan kedua-dua pemimpin dijangka bertukar-tukar pandangan mengenai isu dua hala, serantau dan antarabangsa yang berkepentingan bersama.

Lawatan itu menggambarkan jalinan persahabatan dan hubungan rapat antara kedua-dua negara selaku jiran rapat dan rakan kongsi di ASEAN, termasuk menerusi pertukaran lawatan di peringkat tinggi seperti lawatan rasmi Anwar ke Manila pada Mac 2023.

Filipina merupakan rakan dagangan dunia ke-15 terbesar Malaysia dan kelima terbesar dalam kalangan negara anggota ASEAN dengan jumlah dagangan bernilai RM41.45 bilion (US$9.42 bilion), dengan peningkatan sebanyak 20.1 peratus berbanding jumlah dagangan pada 2021.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) arrested a total of 84 foreign women suspected of working as guest relations officers (GROs) at an unlicensed entertainment centre in Bukit Bintang here, on Sunday (July 23).

These women, aged 18 to 46, were arrested in a raid conducted by the Crime Prevention Unit, D7 Division of the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department at 1.10 am.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said that nine other individuals including the centre's manager and employees, aged between 31 and 45, were also arrested.

He said the police also inspected 22 local GROs and 46 employees as well as 336 customers and of that number six customers tested positive for methamphetamine and ketamine.

"During the raid, the police also seized sales receipts, GRO employee receipts, liquor, one mobile phone unit, two video recorder units, two microphone units and RM14,862 in cash," he said in a statement today.

Razarudin said all detainees and seizures were taken to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters for further investigation.

He added that the entertainment centre has a KTV concept that provides a total of 17 karaoke rooms according to payment packages, starting from RM3,800 to RM25,0000, as well as providing foreign and local GROs upon request with fixed payment rates.

"The centre which operates from 8 pm to 6 am every day was found to be operating without a valid entertainment centre licence while also abusing the restaurant licence issued by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall.

"PDRM advises all entertainment centre operators to comply with all regulations set if they want to run an entertainment business," he said.

Razarudin said PDRM will monitor the entertainment centres and stern action will be taken if there are still entertainment centre operators who carry out prohibited activities such as employing foreign GROs, prostitution and the sale/use of drugs at the premises.

PUTRAJAYA: Pengerusi Pakatan Harapan (PH) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim mempengerusikan mesyuarat Majlis Presiden gabungan itu di kediaman rasmi Perdana Menteri di Kompleks Seri Perdana di sini malam Isnin.

Mesyuarat yang berlangsung lebih dua jam bermula 9 malam itu dihadiri oleh semua pimpinan utama PH termasuk Ketua Setiausaha Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, yang juga Setiausaha Agung PKR.

Saifuddin Nasution ketika dihubungi pemberita berkata mesyuarat itu antara lain membincangkan persiapan akhir PH bagi menghadapi Pilihan Raya Negeri (PRN) pada 12 Ogos ini.

"Mesyuarat berkenaan persiapan terakhir menjelang penamaaan calon... yang pengerusikan Perdana Menteri. Semua pimpinan utama PH ada," katanya.

Suruhanjaya Pilihan Raya telah menetapkan PRN di Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Pulau Pinang, Kedah, Terengganu dan Kelantan dilaksanakan serentak dengan hari penamaan calon Sabtu ini.

Pilihan Raya Kecil bagi Parlimen Kuala Terengganu turut diadakan serentak pada hari berkenaan.

This is mainly for investments in the targeted manufacturing sector that the government is encouraging through the upcoming New Investment Policy (NIP) and New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will provide immigration facilitation to strategic investors who make quality investments with a value of at least RM5 billion in Malaysia, as announced by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI).

This is mainly for investments in the targeted manufacturing sector that the government is promoting through the New Investment Policy (NIP) and the upcoming New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030, he said in a statement on Monday.

A strategic investor is defined as any strategic individual for investment, including company owners, top management and key decision makers.

Strategic investors can be granted a specially tailored Talent Residence Pass (RP-T) without the need to obtain an existing employment pass or have a previous working presence in Malaysia.

According to MITI, this pass, processed by Talent Corporation Malaysia Bhd (TalentCorp), will facilitate the entry and stay of eligible investors, as well as their spouses and dependents for up to 10 years in Malaysia.

He said RP-T fast track candidates are identified and proposed by certain agencies based on their investment value and/or potential for consideration by the RP-T Fast Track Committee.

MITI also announced details of immigration facilitation for nomadic workers, defined as digital freelancers, independent contractors and remote workers in the manufacturing sector targeted under NIP and NIMP 2030.

"The Digital Nomad Pass for the manufacturing sector will enable digitally or technically skilled foreign workers to stay in Malaysia with their spouses and dependents for up to two years, taking advantage of the DE Region Digital Nomad Pass introduced in October 2022 by the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC)," he said.

The presentation of passes by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to several investors and nomadic workers was held at the Prime Minister's Department yesterday.
